Patterns and potential drivers of dramatic changes in Tibetan lakes, 1972–2010

Most glaciers in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau are retreating, and glacier melt has been emphasized as the dominant driver for recent lake expansions on the Tibetan Plateau. By investigating detailed changes in lake extents and levels across the Tibetan Plateau from Landsat/ICESat data, we found a pattern of dramatic lake changes from 1970 to 2010 (especially after 2000) with a southwest-northeast transition from shrinking, to stable, to rapidly expanding. This pattern is in distinct contrast to the spatial characteristics of glacier retreat, suggesting limited influenceof glacier melt on lake dynamics. The plateau-wide pattern of lake change is related to precipitation variation and consistent with the pattern of permafrost degradation induced by rising temperature. More than 79% of lakes we observed onthe central-northern plateau (with continuous permafrost) are rapidly expanding, even without glacial contributions, while lakes fed by retreating glaciersin southern regions (with isolated permafrost) are relatively stable or shrinking. Our study shows the limited role of glacier melt and highlights the potentially important contribution of permafrost degradation in predicting future water availability in this region, whereunderstanding these processes is of critical importance to drinking water, agriculture, and hydropower supply of densely populated areas in South and East Asia.

李英奎,美国田纳西州大学地理系副教授,1992年北京大学城市与环境科学系毕业,1995年于北京大学城市与环境科学系获硕士学位,2001年于北京大学城市与环境科学系获博士学位,2003-2004年在美国普渡大学地球与大气科学系从事博士后研究工作,2004-2005年美国普渡大学地球与大气科学系客座助理教授,2005-2006年美国博林格林州立大学地质系客座助理教授,2006-2009年美国密苏里大学哥伦比亚分校地理系助理教授,2009-2012年美国田纳西大学地理系助理教授,2012年至今美国田纳西州大学地理系副教授。

主要研究方向:古气候和环境变化:利用宇成核素(CN),光释光(OSL)和其他技术研究青藏高原、天山、以及哥斯达黎地区的古气候和环境变化。

光探测与测量及地表过程:开发和应用光探测和测量技术,以量化地表过程,包括河岸侵蚀,沟蚀,冰川退缩,地形提取和测绘,地形生成和三维建模等。

气候和人对环境的影响:使用RS(遥感)和GIS(地理信息系统)技术调查湖泊水位波动,气候变化对青藏高原地区的影响,评估土地利用变化/城市化对地表径流和水质的影响。

地理信息系统和空间分析:应用地理信息系统解决各种地理和环境问题,如利用GIS技术进行冰盖模型性能评估,自动边界提取和空间优先保护。
