The family institution is the foundation of humanity. Family well-beingsupports all other social institutions while other social institutions alsoinfluence family well-being. U.S. families vary in form and function. Thedynamic nature of U.S. families relates to the well-being of U.S. families. Wefirst review the characteristics of U.S. families and explain how thosecharacteristics relate to the health of American families. American familieshave a number of social problems, including divorce. The aspects of divorce inAmerican families are reviewed. Beyond the bad outcomes of American familiesare the worse, “ugly” outcomes. After reviewing the darker side of Americanfamilies such as family violence and abandonment, social policies and programrecommendations provide a path forward.
