Thisstudy projected the societal cost and benefit of an expansion of a water accessintervention that promotes lunchtime plain water consumption by placing waterdispensers in New York school cafeterias to all schools nationwide. A decisionmodel was constructed to simulate two events under Markov chainprocesses—placing water dispensers at lunch times in school cafeteriasnationwide versus no action. The incremental cost pertained to water dispenserpurchase and maintenance, whereas the incremental benefit was resulted fromcases of childhood overweight/obesity prevented and corresponding lifetimedirect (medical) and indirect costs saved.
