Inthis expository talk, we will try to see the notion of sums of squares frommany different points of view，including areas in elementary geometry, simple number theory, andthe structure of positive real polynomials.

主讲人介绍：

蔡文端（Man-Duen Choi），祖籍福州，生于南京，长于香港。多伦多大学数学系教授，加拿大皇家科学院院士，Israel Halperin Prize获得者(1980)，加拿大数学学会Coxeter-James Prized Lecturer(1983)，2006年度国际线性代数学会讲习教授(ILAS Lecturer)。研究方向涉及算子代数、算子理论、矩阵分析、量子信息与量子计算及平方和问题等。蔡教授于1975年发表了完全正映射定理，后也称 Choi’s theorem，此定理在量子信息理论中有重要应用，成为量子信息论之基石。
